I will periodically post helpful and informative news and links
pertaining to Ward 6 Somerville. Please check back often.
Winter News 2011...into 2012
Dear Neighbors and Friends,
I hope you had a happy Thanksgiving celebration and are ready for the holiday season
to begin in full swing. I want to start off this newsletter by thanking you very
much for your support in the election on November 8th. Thanks to you, I was re-elected
to serve a fourth term on the Somerville Board of Aldermen. I am looking forward
to returning to the Board and working with you to continue to shine a light on local
government and advocate for the advancement of our community.
In this e-newsletter you will find information about upcoming events and happenings
both in the community and at city hall. If you have events you would like me to
include in a future e-newsletter, please send me an email to:
rebekah.gewirtz@gmail.com.
Best wishes to all for a happy and healthy New Year!

In this section of my e-newsletter, I'm looking to hear from you on important issues
facing the city right now. I hope this feature of my newsletter will encourage you

with me. Please share your responses with me via email at

- Proposed Charter School for Somerville
Recently, a proposal has been presented to the state to create a new Charter School
in Somerville. I'm concerned about the funding formula for charter schools. If
this new school were approved, approximately $5 million would come out of our district
to go to fund the charter school - possibly resulting in the closing of one or more
elementary schools here in the city. There will be a public hearing on this proposal
on Wednesday Dec 14th 4-6pm at Somerville High School. What's your take on a new
charter school coming to Somerville? Click
here for more information.
- Cabot Farm building on Broadway near Powderhouse Rotary
Recently, I drove by this old, run down building and shook my head. It is in such
terrible disrepair. It's my understanding that a new owner may be on the horizon.
If you could redevelop this building, what would you see it become?
- Red Line shut down in Davis Sq on the weekends
Starting earlier this month, the MBTA closed the Red Line on Saturdays and Sundays
from Harvard to Alewife in order to perform needed repairs. I'm interested in hearing
from residents and business owners about whether this change has impacted your shopping
or dining habits or your business. Click here for an article
about our city's efforts to encourage the T to initiate a campaign supporting local Davis Square businesses.
In response to the weekend closure, the Somerville Chamber of Commerce is also
launching a new site:
http://www.shopinsomerville.com/
One thing that gives me some piece of mind is the reliability of MBTA shuttle service.
I have found shuttles are a reliable, quick way to travel. Has this situation
changed your shopping habits or weekend activities? Send me an email and let me
know.
- Single Stream Recycling - what's your take on the roll out?
Single stream recycling (also known as Zero Sort) was rolled out citywide this fall.
Have you found that it makes recycling simpler? Did you get too many or too few
bins? The more I know about your experiences the better I can advocate for improvements,
if needed.
- Local Hiring Ordinance for Somerville
This fall, the Somerville Community Corporation and other interested residents have
worked hard to advance a Local Hiring Ordinance in the city. In our region, Boston
has something similar. I have expressed concern that if other cities like Cambridge
passed a local hiring ordinance, it could hurt our Somerville workers when they
seek construction jobs in that city. On the flip side, the ordinance would apply
to companies who have received a city subsidy and the ordinance seeks a "goal" of
30% local hiring not a hard and fast requirement. What's your take on this proposal?
For news stories about the ordinance click

Fall 2011 Community Newsletter
Dear Friends,
It's a new season and there's a lot to tell you about what's happening in and around
Ward 6. To me, one of the best things about living in New England is the Fall and
especially here in Somerville there is much to do in and around the city this time
of year! See below for everything from community meetings to events and information
about the now annual HONK! Festival. As always, if you would like me to include
any events or information in my next e-newsletter, please send me an email to rebekah.gewirtz@gmail.com.
This year is particularly exciting as it's an election year on the local level.
While I do not have an opponent in this year's election, I would still like to ask
for your vote on November 8th. I am also very excited about the candidacy of Christine
Barber who is a strong community leader running for Alderman in Ward 4. Christine
is a health care advocate with years of experience working to improve her neighborhood.
If elected, I know she will be a strong, progressive voice on the Board of Aldermen.
Christine has a fundraiser coming up on September 20th from 5:30-7pm at Brunello's
on Broadway in Winter Hill. For more information on Christine, please check out
her website at: http://christinebarber4somerville.com/

- Walmart in Assembly Square?
As you may have read in the newspapers this summer, Walmart has designs on moving
to our city. I'm concerned about Walmart coming to Somerville because of their
history of harming locally owned and operated businesses, which hurts communities
- and because of their history of poor treatment of their workers. With so much
at stake in Assembly Square and the promise of an urban village in the future,
I'm concerned that Walmart coming will limit our capacity to see a unique vibrant
community unfold on the Mystic. What are your thoughts about Walmart coming to
Assembly Square? Send me an email by clicking here.
- Zero-sort Recycling to being citywide
You may have heard by now that the Board of Aldermen recently approved a contract
to start citywide zero-sort or "single stream" recycling in Somerville in October.
There are community meetings http://www.somervillema.gov/news/schedule-set-upcoming-zero-sort-recycling-informational-meetings happening throughout the city so people can have their questions answered.
Each property will be getting a new large recycling barrel on wheels for your convenience,
free of charge. Only as many as are needed will be distributed so if you live in
a 2 family home, it's likely you will only get one. (So no need to worry about
a cluttering of the barrels in your driveway or back yard). Do you think the advent
of zero-sort recycling will help your family recycle more easily? Do you have any
suggestions as we roll out the program? Send me an email by clicking here.
- Green line delayed - again
A few weeks ago, we got word the state plans to delay the extension of the green
line to Somerville until at least 2018. Immediately, the Somerville state delegation,
Board of Aldermen, and mayor moved into action to get answers from the state. The
city may file suit. While I usually ask a question in this section of the newsletter,
I'd like to instead here ask you to please sign the petition>
and join us in demanding that the Green Line extension happens on time in keeping
with the legal commitment of the state to Somerville. There will also be an opportunity
to give comments on the delay at a public meeting on September 13th. Click here
for more details.

Proposal to add 31 residential units on Summer Street
343 Summer Street before the Zoning Board on October 5, 2011 at 7pm at City Hall
on the Second Floor
This controversial development proposal comes before the Zoning Board of Appeals
on October 7th - once again. The proposal would add 31 residential units on Summer
Street and a new VFW post building on the adjacent lot, in the residential zone.
Neighbors have been watching this issue closely and many have expressed opposition
to the proposal. I'm concerned that the developer is pitting residents and veterans
at the post against each other

could simultaneouly be intensly passionate and effective and also have good cheer...
she had an ease with people that made her magnetic. Lou Ann made a huge difference
in the lives of many and her work and countless contributions to our community will
live on. A memorial service is being planned for September. To see Lou Ann's obituary

Ward 6 Fun Fact
The theme for Art Beat 2011 is..
Art Beat is the annual summertime festival held each year in Davis Square. This
event brings hundreds of people from all over to our square together for dance,
arts, music, and crafts. You can find out more about Art Beat on the Somerville
Arts Council Website.
According to the site, RED was selected as the theme this year because it is a
color you can't ignore..."the hue is many things: hot, passionate and life sustaining".
The Arts Counil encourages artists to explore red in various ways, both literally
and figuratively, so we can expect a wide variety of interpretations at ArtBeat
this year! Hope to see you there.

- West Branch Library
In response to concerns about upkeep of our neighborhood library, I have requested
that signifcant improvements be made to restore and improve the interior of the
building. I have also asked that the library be open at least one day of the weekend
for several hours to accomodate patrons who would like to use the library during
those peak times. In addition, in a stroke of great luck and kind generosity,
the West Branch Library was given a donation of $15,000 to improve the Children's
room. This money will be used specifically for improvements of that room and not
for upkeep of the building. Here is an article about my advocacy for the library:
article.
Do you have additional things you would like to see happen at the West Branch?
Let me know your thoughts by sending me an email.
- Somerville Schools
Many people may have seen the article in the Globe that was very critical of our
schools here in Somerville. The mayor, chair of the school committee, superintendent
of schools, and I wrote a joint response to the article and the Somerville News
covered the fallout. I know different parents have different priorities when deciding
whether to send their kids to school here in Somerville. As a result, I have suggested
that the city conduct a poll on what is most important to parents when deciding
whether or not to stay in Somerville and send their kids to school here. Whether
or not the poll happens, I thought I would try to accomplish something similar through
this section of my newsletter. I'm curious to hear your thoughts about what weighs
most heavily into your decision to stay - or not to stay - in Somerville with respect
to the schools. Send me an email and let me know rebekah.gewirtz@gmail.com.
As president of the Board of Aldermen this year, I serve on the School Committee
so I will be happy to share what I learn from you with my colleagues.
- NEW Parking Meter Pilot Program
A 90-Day pilot program was established in the beginning of June to test improved
parking meters in Davis Square. The pilot involves no change to hours of operation
or rates to any of these meters, located on the north side of Holland Street (Johnny
D's side), from Winter St. to Taipei Tokyo and then the North side of Elm, from
about the Camera Store to the Burren. According to a local parking expert, this
is an area of intense utilization and, therefore, best suited for the pilot project.
These meters will now accept MC/Visa, in addition to coins (no parkcards). Traffic
and Parking will get email alerts when meters are jammed or not working, which is
great for the appeals process and fto alleviate frustration on the part of users.
This also allows for parking spot utilization to be logged real time, so the city
can tell how many people are parked in the square at different times during the
day. Traffic and Parking is hoping this helps to improve customer service and accountability.
Have you tried the new meters? What do you think? Send me an email and let me know
rebekah.gewirtz@gmail.com.

Neighborhood and Alderman Meetings
- Board of Aldermen Budget Public Hearing, June 22, 2011 at 6pm at Somerville City
Hall, Alderman Chambers
The Board of Aldermen has been deliberating over the city budget since June 13th.
On June 22nd there will be a public hearing where the public will have the opportunity
to give their input into the process and ideas for areas of savings and innovation.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the budget process:
Rebekah.Gewirtz@gmail.com. Alderman meetings
now stream live on the web so you can watch from wherever you may be by going to
that same website.
- Zoning Board of Appeals takes up Summer St Shaft site, June 22, 2011 at 6pm at the
Visiting Nurses Association on Lowell St.
This issue was last taken up at the Zoning Board meeting on June 8th. Aldermen
White, Sullivan and I all expressed concerns about the project as proposed and in
support of neighbors who are united in opposition to the current plans. The Zoning
Board will continue to hear the case on June 22nd but with an amended report from
Planning Staff that recommends the applicant withdraw the current application and
re-apply based on the fact that they did not present all of the required documents
to the city as requested on several occassions.
- Ward 6 Resi-Stat Meeting, June 27, 2011 6:30-8:30pm at 27 College Ave, Ciampa Manor
This meeting is open to all and is a good way to get statistical information about
all that's happening in and around the neighborhood with respect to public safety,
roads, the schools, transportation issues and other hot topics in our neighborhood.
For more information, feel free to send me an email to: rebekah.gewirtz@gmail.com.
Attention Home Owners!
- The City sent out a letter on May 20th informing those taxpayers who have had
the residential tax exemption for more than 5-6 years that they must re-apply in
order to get the residential exemption this year (worth $1,738). The letter said
this is the only notice. Documentation in required to be sent in with the form.
If you have owned your home for more than 5-6 years and currently live in it as
your primary residence, please remember to do this! I'm concerned some people,
particularly older residents, may not understand the form (or discard it unintentionally)
and end up paying significantly higher taxes. Please let me know if you can think
of anyone may need extra assistance with this.

Ward 6 Fun Fact
Did you know that the Somerville Public Library recently received a generous donation
in the amount of $15,000 from Karl and Hannah Voskuil for improvements to the Children's
Room at the West Branch Library? What improvements do you think are most important
at the West Branch? See Constituent Corner below...
Constituent Corner
In this section of my e-newsletter, I'm looking to hear from you on important issues
facing the city. Click on the link at the end of each question and let me know
what you think. Getting your feedback on these issues is very important to me,
and I hope this feature of my newsletter will encourage you to share your thoughts,
ideas, and concerns. As always, feel free to contact me via email at rebekah.gewirtz@gmail.com or 617-718-0792.
- Improvements at the West Branch Library
I have heard a lot of people's concerns about the Children's Room of the West Branch
library and it's need for an upgrade - so I'm thrilled we will now have $15,000
to put towards making those improvements. Thank you to Karl and Hannah Voskuil
for their generour donation! What would you like to see happen at the West Branch?
Additional changes or upgrades? Let me know by sending me an email at rebekah.gewirtz@gmail.com.
- SomerVision and the Powderhouse School
Throughout the course of the past two years, the Office of Strategic Planning and
Community Development has convened a visioning process for the city. We conducted
a portion of that process here in Davis Square with the Davis Square visioning process.
(Information about the results of that process are available on the city website:
www.somervillema.gov.
In the context of planning for the future, there has been a healthy debate about
the future of the Powderhouse School. Neighbors have come together and formed
a listserve and a community group about the site and are planning on attending the
March 28th SomerVision meeting at the TAB Building on Holland Street to ask more
questions about it. Do you want to get involved in this neighborhood group? If
so, please let me know and I'd be glad to connect you to the organizers. Also:
what are your thoughts on the property? Should it be demolished and used as a community
space; should it be converted to condos; should there be some kind of mix? Send
me an email at rebekah.gewirtz@gmail.com with your ideas.
- Rodents?
At the last Board of Aldermen meeting there was a long discussion about a resurgence
of rodents in some areas of the city. I haven't heard much from constituents about
rodents and I'm wondering if you've noticed any recently and where you've seen them.
This information is very helpful to me as we work on ordinances to keep the city
clean! Please send me an email with any information at rebekah.gewirtz@gmail.com.
- Looming Cut to Local Aid
It seems likely that state aid to Somerville will be cut once again this fiscal
year due to ongoing fiscal problems at the state and federal level - and because
the impacts of dramatic and permanent tax cuts (largely for wealthy corporations
and individuals) during the late 1990s are being realized. Somerville cannot continue
to sustain these cuts and still provide the excellent services we have all come
to expect. This is why the Board of Aldermen and School Committee unanimmously
supported a piece of legislation called An Act to Invest in Our Communities. This
bill would modify the tax code to make it more fair and equitable, raising $1.2
billion largely from those who can afford to pay (those who make $560,000 or more
per year). This legislation is also something I have been working on at the National
Association of Social Workers in a large coalition of concerned groups. We all
know that without new revenue these cuts will continue and the people who pay that
price are kids in our schools, the elderly, and moderate income individuals who
are just getting by now. For more information about this bill or to weigh in with
your thoughts, please feel free to send me an email to
Rebekah.Gewirtz@gmail.com. A website about
the bill will be launched in the near future.

Neighborhood and Alderman Meetings
Neighborhood Meeting about 343 Summer Street (the Summer Street Shaft site)
March 23, 2011, 6pm at Ciampa Manor 27 College Ave
In April, the Somerville Zoning Board of Appeals is expected to vote on whether
to approve this new proposal. The impact on the neighborhood (positive or negative)
will be significant: 31 new units would roughly double the number of residents on
Summer Street between Cutter Ave and Willow Ave. Whether or not you approve of the
new proposal, it is crucial that neighbors be aware of the proposal and have a voice
in this process. This meeting will be an opportunity to get together with other
neighbors to review what has been proposed and to talk about the project. I will
be facilitating the meeting. For more information, please feel free to be in touch
with me about it!
Planning Board and Land Use Meeting on Pavement Ordinance
March 23, 2011 at 6pm
Last year, working with a PhD student from Tufts University Colleen Butler, and
Ward 2 Alderman Maryann Heuston, we discussed at length in the Parks and Open Space
committee an initiative to incentivize less impervious surfaces around our city
since Somerville has the highest density of impervious surface in the area. If
we are able to encourage more porus surfaces in driveways and through zoning it
will help to prevent flooding and the heat island effect in our city. The Planning
Department has done a lot of research on this topic and provided invaluable insights.
There will be a meeting on the proposal that is coming forward on March 23rd at
City Hall. All are welcome to attend.
Regular Alderman Meeting with Citation Honoring Jen Lawrence of Groundwork Somerville
March 24, 2011 at 7pm at Somerville City Hall

her fantastic work as Executive Director of Groundwork Somerville for the past
5 years. This spring Jen will be moving on from Groundwork and she will be sorely
missed. All are welcome to come to city hall for this brief ceremony and presentation
of a citation - and for the entire meeting for that matter!
SomerVision Meeting on Comprehensive Planning Process

planning process and visioning work that's been done over the course of the past
two years. These meetings are happening throughout the city and this meeting will
be tailored to the western part of the city. All are welcome to attend and ask
questions. For more information please contact the planning department at 617-625-6600.
Assembly Row DIF Bond Hearing
March 31, 2011 at 6pm at Somerville City Hall
This past year the Board of Aldermen voted on a proposal that would create a DIF
for the Assembly Square project. DIF stands for District Improvement Financing
plan. I studied this issue at length and raised concerns about the city turning
over a certain percentage of future tax revenue to pay off the bond we will have
to take out ($25 million) if we go forward with this plan. However, with the Orange
Line T stop hanging in the balance it seemed clear we needed to go in this direction
- the state required the city to create a DIF if it was to ensure funds for the
T stop. Without the Orange Line stop at Assmebly Sq I believe any future development
is untenable there. This upcoming meeting will be about authorizing the bond for
$25 million. We will hear from city officials and residents about this important
vote. All are welcome to attend.

Winter 2010
Dear Friends,
I want to thank all of you who made a donation in memory of my mom, Nancy Gewirtz, for my Pancreatic Cancer Research walk. Thanks to your generous support we raised more than $2,300 towards finding a cure.
In this e-newsletter I have some good news to share with you in addition to events and happenings throughout Ward 6 and Somerville. At the end of November, I was voted President-elect by my colleagues on the Board of Aldermen for the coming year - 2011. I'm honored and humbled to have been elected and look forward to a very productive year as President. I'd like to also congratulate my colleague and friend, Tom Taylor, the Ward 3 Alderman who was elected Vice President for 2011. The organizational meeting of the Board will take place at City Hall in the Alderman Chambers on January 3, 2011 at 6pm. I'd like to invite you to come to City Hall that night and be my guest for the ceremony. I will give a speech that night, which will focus on the future of our great city and some key priorities for the coming year. Click here for the article that appeared in the
Somerville Journal.
I hope you enjoy this version of my e-newsletter and, as always, if you'd like me to add any news items to my next quarterly e-newsletter, please send me an email at Rebekah.Gewirtz@gmail.com.
Best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year!

Subway Sandwich shop on Broadway in Powderhouse Square
This coming Wednesday, December 15th at 5pm there will be a community meeting at 860 Broadway about a Subway Sandwich shop coming to that location. I testified against the shop coming at the Planning Board meeting on December 2nd because I am concerned that the block is going to become monopolized by chain stores. Locally owned, independent businesses add character, charm, and importantly, more local jobs than chains, which is why I have been such a strong proponent of them - and of organizations that support them like Somerville Local First. I haven't heard from many people about this planned Subway and I'm curious to get your feedback. What do you think about this store coming to 860 Broadway? Please email me at Rebekah.Gewirtz@gmail.com and let me know and also come to the community meeting on Wednesday night!
Infrastructure improvements to Davis Sq - planning is beginning!
I'm proud to announce that Davis Square will soon be getting a face lift. Working with the Mayor we have secured funds to upgrade Davis Square in the coming year. Davis has been starting to show it's age so I'm very much looking forward to this process. Are you interested in getting involved in the planning? A group will likely convene starting in the early spring and I'd love to hear your ideas and learn if this is something that would interest you. Send me an email to Rebekah.Gewirtz@gmail.com if you have ideas or want to get more involved.
Street Sweeping concerns raised
Lately, I have gotten a lot of complaints about street sweepers not coming at scheduled times - or at all - on certain streets. During the budget this past year, the city decided to outsource street sweeping services to a private company. At the time, I expressed concerns about this and am frustrated that the company who won the bid seems to have been unable to handle the job. Have you experienced street sweeping problems on your street? Please send me an email and let me know to Rebekah.Gewirtz@gmail.com. I'm working on tracking all of the streets where this is a problem.
Library Planning for the Future
The Trustees of the Somerville Public Library are planning for the future of the libraries and to aid in this, they have created a survey for community members to complete. Click here for the survey. I have also been informed that a donation has been made to improve the Children's section of the West Branch Library here in Davis Square. This is great news for parents and families throughout the area! How would you like to see the West Branch improved? Send me an email to Rebekah.Gewirtz@gmail.com with your ideas.
Upcoming Meetings and News Links of Interest
Board of Alderman sub-committee of Housing and Community Development Committee,
Monday December 13, 2010 at 6:30pm at Somerville City Hall on the Second Floor
At this final committee meeting of the year, we will discuss how the Board of Aldermen can work with the Somerville Community Corporation and the Affordable Housing Organizing Committee to promote affordable housing particularly for homeless families in the city. At the last meeting of the committee, we looked at a variety of different legislative options to promote affordable housing in general in the city. At this coming meeting, we will narrow down the legislative possibilities so we can potentially ask the city solicitor to draft an ordinance that would be referred to the full board and then the Legislative Matters committee for further review. All are welcome to attend this meeting. See relevant article entitled "Somerville aldermen eye legislation to promote affordable housing for homeless" by clicking here.

Board of Alderman sub-committee meeting of Confirmation of Appointments
on Wednesday December 15, 2010 at 6pm at City Hall on the Second Floor
At this meeting, the committee will take up appointments to the Fire Fighter Reserve force. For more on my advocacy with other aldermen on this issue check out the Boston Globe story "Aldermen erupt over failure to put veteran on reserve list" by clicking here. And for the article entitled, "Reserve List Questions Unanswered" click here.
This meeting will be very important. All are welcome to attend.
