Rebekah Gewirtz is an effective leader who brings people together to improve our community. A Somerville resident in the Davis Square area, Rebekah's work has had a positive impact in our community and our city and on November 8, 2005 she was elected Alderman in Ward 6.
In 2003, Rebekah co-founded the Progressive Democrats of Somerville, an active political group in the city working to get more people involved in local government and the political process. From 2002-2004 she worked as Legislative Director for former State Representative (and now State Senator), Pat Jehlen, helping families in Somerville with issues that make a difference in their daily lives ranging from traffic and parking problems to larger social issues.
In 2002 Rebekah was the Somerville Coordinator of the Reich for Governor Campaign, a campaign that talked about real solutions and opportunities for our families; and she helped Robert Reich win our city in the Democratic Primary that year.
Currently, Rebekah is the Director of Governmental Affairs and Public Policy at the National Association of Social Workers, MA Chapter. She recently finished her Master's degree in Public Affairs at the McCormack Institute, University of Massachusetts, Boston. Prior to this she worked as the Lead Organizer at the Commonwealth Coalition, serving as Boston Coordinator on the Civic Engagement Initiative and on the Mass Voters for Fair Elections project. Rebekah also serves as vice-chair of the Ward 6 Democratic City Committee, furthering progressive public policy and Democratic politics and keeping our Democratic Party strong.
